Teacher Quality Standard 3

Teachers plan and deliver effective instruction and create an environment that facilitates learning for their students.

Element: B

Teachers use formal and informal methods to assess student learning, provide feedback, and use results to inform planning and instruction.

Evidence Outcomes

  •  determines the students' current skill levels and uses that information to plan instruction.

  • designs or utilizes formative and summative assessments aligned to the learning objectives and standards

  • observes and collects divergent sources of data about student learning in relation to the learning objective.

  • analyzes divergent sources of data about student learning.

  • evaluates and documents student performance based on divergent sources of data.

Formative assessments are often collected through the use of google classroom forms, each student’s answers is then loaded into a master sheet where instructors are able to view each student’s answers. This format provides a space where students can communicate with instructors on where they think they are in the class and ask questions on a digital format if not comfortable talking to instructors in person. Over the course of the semester we have used this method to collect information from students on the following:

  • Classroom expectations/procedures

  • Student’s comfort level with various mediums/materials

  • Safety procedures when working with different materials

  • Student’s seating placements

  • How we can provide support and accommodations to students.

Upon completing a piece of artwork, students must fill out an “Artwork Reflection”. This is used as a method of summative assessment as to what students learned throughout completing their piece, what element of art they used, and aspects of the project they liked/disliked. This provides information for instructors on how to best support students with their next artwork and how to challenge students with their thinking on their next project.
